Pearl Jewelry

An irritant to an oyster, is a beautiful gem to make jewelry from to us!
Pearls have been highly regarded as gems throughout history. Egyptians were buried with them, ancient Romans considered them a symbol of wealth and Knights sometimes wore them to battle during the Dark Ages. In the 1960's pearl jewelry was made popular by Jackie Kennedy and remains so today especially for weddings and formal events.

Pearls are created by an irritant inside an oyster or mollusk, the oyster secrets a substance (nacre) around the irritant in layers. Over the years, this creates a beautiful luminescent pearl.

Pearls can be created naturally, but most used in jewelry are cultured which means that the initial irritant is put into the oyster by man. These cultured pearls come in many sizes and colors.

Pearl jewelry typically uses freshwater cultured pearls and Mother of Pearl shell. Each piece below is handmade and combined with sterling silver, and other gemstones or shell for a unique wearable treasure!

When caring for your jewelry, remember that pearls are very soft and delicate. Chemicals from hair spray, makeup, perfume and even body oils can cause your pearls to become dull so be sure to wipe them with a soft cloth after you wear them. Store them in a soft pouch away from harder jewelry that could cause scratching. Click here to learn more about cleaning jewelry
