Is Chinese Turquoise Better For Jewelry?

Chinese turquoise isn't really any different than turquoise from any other part of the world and it all looks great in jewelry! As far as value goes it is valued the same so you should be unconcerned about where the turquoise in your jewelry comes from but always be looking to buy the best quality stone as well as one that catches your eye and that you will be happy wearing.

Since many US mines are running towards depleted, Chinese turquoise is imported into the US for use in jewelry. Without it there wouldn't be enough turquoise to go around! It comes in a variety of colors from green to blue with different spider webbing. It can be used in any type of jewelry but is typically combine with sterling to form rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Worried about the quality or getting taken with a fake? First off, most turquoise that is used for jewelry is treated in some way and Chinese turquoise is no exception. Raw turquoise is very chalky and can break up easily so it needs to be stabilized so that it will last. There's many treatments but most include using an epoxy or resin to stabilize the stone - the best application of this is to use a clear resin so the natural color of the stone is still visible. Other treatments do add color to a stone whose color is not up to par, but of course you would want a natural colored stone and not a dyed one. Be aware also, that some manufacturers dye other stones such as howlite and try to sell them as turquoise. If you spend some time looking at turquoise that you know is the real thing, you will be able to spot a fake a mile away.

To care for Chinese turquoise always handle it carefully and make sure it doesn't get scratched by other jewels in your jewelry box. Take care to insure that no chemicals get on it such as sprays from perfumes and hair spray. Never use chemical cleaners on turquoise, clean it with a soft cloth and warm water. Make sure you dry your jewelry thouroughly if you wet it for cleaning, failure to do so may result in water getting in the cracks and eventually ruining the piece!
