Beading Stitch Guide

You can use this beading stitch guide to learn how to bead with seed beads.
Jewelry made with these tiny beads is lightweight and beautiful. There’s an infinite amount of patterns and shapes you can come up with using seed beads, bead thread and needles, but be careful because once you learn a few stitches you may become addicted like me!

There are 2 basic stitches that you should know when making seed bead jewelry – the brick stitch and the peyote stitch. These are used in flat pieces like a wide bracelet or necklace and also in amulet bags. Seed beads are available in so many colors, you could bead only one pattern our whole life and make it different every time!

In addition to these stitches there is a huge variety of patterns and shapes you can make with seed beads. I have seen beautiful 3 dimensional flowers and even bowls made by expert beaders. Hopefully, I will be able to add more patterns here as I learn them!

The peyote stitch is an ancient stitch and no one really know who came up with it! It has been used in Native American and African culture for longer than people wrote things down and it is impossible to tell who had it first. Possibly it was “discovered” be each individually as is certainly possible. It is an easy bead stitch to learn, once you get the hang of it you can do it in your sleep.

The brick stitch has been used by Native Americans for years to decorate gourds, bags, clothing and other items. Brick stitch beadwork has also been handed down by many other cultures and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that this stitching “developed” in parallel in different countries. You can use the brick stitch to bead jewelry, bags, pillow and anything else you desire.
